Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline personality disorder is characterized by long-term patterns of chaotic emotional swings and turbulent, sometimes violent, thoughts about themselves and others. This condition promotes impulsive and careless actions, and individuals who have this condition often find themselves in chaotic, unstable relationships. Causes are unknown, but commonalities in individuals with BPD include: sexual abuse, abandonment, dysfunctional families, and poor familial communication and connection. Symptoms of BPD include:

  • Feelings of boredom
  • Fear of abandonment
  • Frequent displays of inappropriate anger
  • Impulsiveness with money, substances, sexual relationships, etc
  • Repeated crisis and self injury
  • Intolerance of being alone
  • Change in perception (people are “good” or “bad” and this status rapidly changes
